I guess we have every reason to suppose that, for the purposes of the song, “Alice van der Meer” is a made-up, generic Dutch name. But as there’s one on Twitter, and as she’s never posted, let’s surprise her and all go “follow” her.

Done. Sorry, Alice – couldn’t resist!

Looking at her profile, Paintball’s Coming Home is a more appropriate song for her.

I’ve just had a thought, shouldn’t the first entry in this gigantic project have been AAA (or perhaps even just A), as in ‘I’ve got a triple A dangling from my lanyard’? If a lyric spoke of drinking a double whisky, you would put that under W, I guess, for whisky, rather than D for double. Just a thought.

Neil G – I guess there’s sometimes a tricky line between cultural references and words/phrases that are in such common usage that they’ve entered into the general lexicon and don’t need any further explanation.

That sent me scurrying to see if I had included “triple-A” under “T”, and (perhaps surprisingly, as Toastkid is right**) …I had. You’re probably correct though Neil, it might have fitted more comfortably under “A”. I’ll claim I did it just to annoy Exxo.
Sadly, I can’t tell you the date on which “triple-A” is going to appear, or I’d have to kill you afterwards. But given that this is day 10 of 17 just covering references starting with “AL…”, you’ll probably guess that “T” is a very, very long way off.
**Or is he? I’m guessing most people would think “triple-A” refers to a battery of some sort. Which in this case it doesn’t. So yeah, I was right to include it.

Our Alice seems to be a Tony Buzan (the Mnemonist) follower and presumably a keen memoriser herself. Perhaps ‘bells-a-ringing’ can be crowbarred into being accidentally relevant. As in, ‘Does this ring a bell, Alice?’

Chris – interesting, what does “triple-A dangling from my lanyard” refer to if not a battery? The only other “triple A” I know about is the American Automobile Association and that doesn’t make sense in context.

AAA – Access All Areas. Dangles on the lanyards of self-important types at gigs.

So the other Alice is another 2017 job under ‘Ted’ is she?

Add her to your list in angry red ink of “references you missed out, Chris”, for submission in five years’ time.
