Having enjoyed Johns contribution to the Banshees I went listening for Armoury Show music, and alas it is boring 80’s music. There were a lot of bands like this, that had absolutely no personality or real innovative style.
Hence, I totally get the lyric from HMHB.

Oh joy of joys this afternoon I rediscovered, hiding in an old 7″ record box, my collection of gig tickets from the early eighties. As if further proof of the blandness of The Armoury Show were needed it turns out I saw them on 9 December 1983 and yet I have absolutely no recollection of this apparent non-event. Even the promoter felt the need to explain who they were on the ticket: “RICHARD JOBSON (Skids) JOHN McGEOGH (Banshees, Visage, Magazine) RUSSELL WEBB (Skids) JOHN DOYLE (Magazine)”.

This may all be true. But the Skids shows of the last couple of years have been excellent. Introduced by Jobson as “an evening of old songs with shit dancing`’.

I was feeling disappointed with myself for dissing The Armoury Show because I’d no recollection of attending one of their gigs. It was a very long time ago and I am old so I can’t really reach a meaningful conclusion about their performance based solely on the fact that I don’t remember it. To try to make amends I had planned to listen to their entire back catalogue and report back accordingly. However, they have nothing available on Spotify. Wikipedia shows their discography as consisting of one album and five singles so it wouldn’t have been too much of trouble to give it all a listen. Another time, maybe.

Have since listened to their entire back catalogue (well, all that’s available on YouBend, anyway). Was pleasantly surprised.
