I know him better as Assistant trainer to Martin Pipe through the eighties and nineties. Produced good horses like Miinnehoma, Granville Again, Make a Stand, Carvills Hill…
It’s funny, they dominated the scene for ages, and I can’t think of that many horses. Think they hoovered up lots of of little races though.

Chester Barnes stories: #1 – as an 11 year old I played him in an exhibition at Pontins Bay View resort in Brixham ( I had won the juniors table tennis competition that week and this was my ‘prize’) and took a few points off him (honest!) 5 or 6 I seem to remember.
#2 – he made the audience laugh at one point by putting the halves of a neatly split table tennis ball , Halex of course, over his eyes and saying “Aah Grasshopper”. This annoyed rather than amused me no end because I had ‘invented’ this at school and he had obviously been watching me at Frecheville comp in Sheffield and stolen my gag.
#3 apart from that he was very pleasant and polite

Rebellious ‘rock n roll’ table tennis player from the 60/70s whose notoriety helped raise the sport’s profile. His deadly rivalry with the dastardly Denis Neale (whom I’m pleased to say I beat several times!) resulted in Neale vowing to jump off the top diving board at Crystal Palace fully clothed if he lost to Barnes in the English Champs final 1974. Barnes won, Neale jumped!
