Another great example of the use of Homeric epithet for humorous effect. See also “featureless TV producer Steve” and “rubber-faced irritant Phil Cool”.

I never noticed till now that DLB pops up in two songs. Are there any other recurring characters like this?

Bryn clearly has had some success in farming with all his certificates and rosebowls. Yet he gets the bus – rare indeed for a farmer. Has his drinking lost him his licence? And has it made him so many enemies (perhaps the relatives of his victims in head-on collisions down those country lanes) that he has to steer clear of half of Salop?
For if, as seems possible, Bryn uses the 113 Telford to Bridgnorth service as part of a roundabout route from Wem to Leominster that would involve at least four separate services, it would suggest that he is steering clear of the more direct (and scenic) route down through Shrewsbury and Ludlow which would require only 3 buses maximum.
(The lyric is also prophetic of course of the way that the Ludlow to Leominster section of that previously shorter journey has just this year been axed by Shropshire CC)

The more you think about it the clearer it becomes that he is using his OAP bus pass now that he’s too infirm (and drunk) to farm or drive, and that’s why he doesn’t just get the train (Wem-Shrewsbury-Leominster in a straight line really) which would be about 3 hours quicker.

@Toastkid. Everyone mentioned in ‘Trumpton Riots’. They all appear again in ‘…Studio Banjo’.

@Exxo. Don’t forget that DLB getting on the 113 is all the stuff of a dream. Surrealism itself. Surely logic and reason are out of the window?

Mind you, he could have just been pissed, like in the other song.
