Just in case anyone doesn’t know, the whole sarcastic sequence about the pavement belonging to the country’s richest aristocrats is not just a flight of fancy, but is probably based on the fact that the Duke’s Grosvenor Estates company (£12 billion assets) does own large swathes of central Birkenhead and Liverpool, as well as more famously Mayfair of course, and at the time when the L1 shopping area was being redeveloped, the “public realm agreements” which turned public streets into parts of private shopping centres, with private security to keep anyone away who they didn’t like the look of, was a matter of some discussion and controversy on Merseyside.

One of the ghouls in Neil Gaiman’s 2008 ‘The Graveyard Book’, who take on the name of the first dead person they eat. Gaiman doesn’t specify which holder of the title this was (presumably earlier than the 6th Duke, Gerald Grosvenor, who died in 2016).

The 7th Duke, Hugh Grosvenor, has announced his engagement to his girlfriend of two years Olivia Henson, who “works for an ethical food firm”. I hope it stays fine for him and his good lady wife-to-be.
