I seem to google the same ‘TV personalities’ from the songs every few months (unless they were on before 1981 and not on ITV in which case I probably know them), but then sure enough a few months later I can’t remember who they are/were. Please someone tell me something about this fella I can’t forget.

OLD APPLEJACK
One of Esther’s ‘nancies’ in the period that I surreptitiously watched That’s Life on my portable upstairs. No way that the parents would watch that rubbish.
Often found in glasses/bow tie/bouffant combination. Usually did musical bits on the show, forming mock punk band ‘Eats Filth’ (what’s that an anagram of kids?) for the purposes of an investigation into the business we call show.

Difficult to find much about this fellow.Esther frequently through water at him because he smoked. Shame i missed it as it seems as amusing as My Family.More latterly he sang in a folk group named Quicksilver. Does he still require his season ticket?

He attended King Edward VI School, Stourbridge at the same time as me. Ran cross – country (I have a team photo) Very quiet and unassuming. Very surprised to see him as one of Ester’s boys a few years on.

Sorry, an ester is a salt of a fatty acid. Obviously I meant Esther. Or did I?
Very bright, very funny, brilliant guitarist, witty songwriter a bit reminiscent of Jake Thackeray at times but also lyrical folk. He went to law college but I think he didn’t complete his law training? I shared a house with him and his then wife, Janet, in Birmingham when I was a student and never got tired of listening to him play. Lost touch with him nearly 40 years ago, but remember him fondly.

Used to meet up regularly with Grant and Nick Fenwick (sadly, no longer with us) who was the resident at the Hare and Hounds and Red Lion folk clubs. Lost touch in the 1980s until … LAST NIGHT! He appeared at the Three Shires Festival, playing as excitingly as ever. “Fingers like LSD-crazed maggots,” as Nick used to say. We agreed not to leave it another 30 years. I could let you have a slightly sharper photo.

Sadly no longer with us. Grant passed away suddenly on July 29th 2022. Saw him perform only a couple of weeks ago at Bromsgrove Folk Festival which I believe proved to be his last gig.

I need some confirmation on this sad demise. Just the info above and an ITK-sounding Tweet so far.

Hilary Spencer, his partner in the folk duo QuickSilver, and their agent Jacey Bedford have both posted their devastation at his passing. It looks real. http://quicksilveruk.com/index.html

I’ve just released this podcast, celebrating the life of grant Baynham, featuring the recordings from a couple of live recordings I did with him in front of an audience. Lots of songs, stories and silliness. He was a wonderful man. Here’s the link to the podcast

I remember Grant sitting in my boat in Twickenham playing his guitar so b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l.l.y to me in 1960s. He lived in a boat near mine at the time. We were friends. He also gave me a pair of tickets for the Green Room on “That’s Life” for my mother and myself! He was a brilliant guitarist, never to be forgotten! (Never think that all the people who live on boats are dropouts. Not true!)
