Being mischievously promoted as the potential heart of Britain’s new ‘second city’. Don’t think the band have ever played there, despite it being an archetypal HMHB gig venue. I assume their gig venue isn’t big enough, sadly.

TAYLO
I saw The Wedding Present there years ago and going to see Sleaford Mods there in a couple of weeks. I could definitely see HMHB playing there.

Granted Fairtrade Zone status in 2003; Sylvia Plath buried in nearby Heptonstall.
Declared the 4th quirkiest place in the world by highlife, the British Airways flight magazine in 2005. If proof were needed, Ed Sheeran was born there.

I saw Damo Suzuki here last year. Very nostalgic ,as I hadn’t seem him for 40 years. We have both gained stones and sport the grey of age .We remain quirky.

HMHB have indeed played at the wonderful Hebden Bridge Trades Club Chris, sometime early-to-mid-nineties as I recall. Somewhere on this site I linked to a review of the gig, in which I proposed a possible inspiration for the “chattering classes” line. Probably in the LHK thread?
I did consider inviting the lads to play there again a few years ago, when the Trades Club asked me how they could help with an event I was fundraising for, but then realised it was certainly too small for the band’s current requirements.
The Trades Club is also the home of the legendary Hebden Bridge Aliens football team, splendid fellows who come to all our events, though year after year their cartilages get fewer.
Thoroughly excellent little town as long as you’re uphill from the flood zone.

Gez’s site informs us that HMHB played HB on 12.2.99, with four reviews of the gig.
(Exxo may recall that he commented on the Lomas Hall thread that it was the highest altitude at which the band had played since that night at the Trades Club.)

I was planning to see Damon at Hebden, Peter, but couldn’t make it. I hear that he recruited members of the aforementioned Bogshed into his band for the night.

So named because of an ancient packhorse bridge over the Hebden Beck..

@ Eric Olthwaite. Not sure Eric.He played 2 sets, with different line ups. In one set Bridget Hayden was on guitar.Interesting to put it mildly! Damos stance and delivery was exactly as it was in 1972 and 73.

Whatever happened to Bogshed? I remember buying their debut album on vinyl, Let Them Eat Bogshed as a wedding present for a work colleague. Hebden Bridge itself…some nice walks, some great pubs, one excellent record shop and that’s about it.

Hebden Bridge gets a mention in the excellent Fall song “Blindness”:
http://annotatedfall.doomby.com/pages/the-annotated-lyrics/blindness.html
There was a poster at the top of the street
Encapsulated in plastic
It had a blind man
So I said: “Blind man, have mercy on me.”
I said: “Blind man, have mercy on me.”
The flat is evil and full of Cavalry and calvary
And Calvary and cavalry.
“Do you work hard?”
It said, “I am from Hebden Bridge.
Somebody said to me: I can’t understand a word you said.”
Said: “99% of non smokers die”

Just watched ‘The Gallows Pole.’ Overall very impressive I thought.

Agreed, especially the broadside ballad singer Jennifer Reid who played Barb, landlady of the self-titled pub in the series. Disappointingly, she and the central character Dave never refer anyone to the blackboard.

Read the book a couple of years ago with high hopes, but thought it was a bit rubbish. Suppose I might give the series a go.
