Hmmm, where does one start?
My main gripe with them is that their education system instils into them the myth that they were hard done by when they signed the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. OK, so ostensibly they lost 2/3 of their territory; however, that loss included modern-day Croatia and large chunks of the surrounding countries. I’ll grant you that there were some iniquities, and large Magyar populations ended up under “foreign” influence, but google “Magyarisation” and see what bad masters the Magyars were once they had wrested some control over their own affairs – and those of their neighbours – from the Habsburgs.
Although nearly a century ago, you will not be in conversation with a Hungarian long before Trianon is raised and the inaccuracies will gush forth. Try countering their assertions and, if you’re lucky, you’ll be told “you don’t understand…”
Many cars sport a pre-Trianon ‘H’ nationality plate, including once that of the current Prime Minister, populist demagogue that he has become.
Basically the past weighs very heavily on Hungarians, who are very much a glass-half-empty people.
And breathe…

Hungarian usage is to put the surname of a person ahead of their forename. Also, Trianon resulted in Hungary losing Transylvania, which should be considered A Good Thing.

The 1956 Hungarian Revolution, which was crushed swiftly by The Soviet Union, led to 200,000 refugees seeking safe havens elsewhere. 20,000 settled in the U.K. This episode of mans humanity to man would seem to have been forgotten by Viktor Orban.

I’ve literally just got back from Budapest and there was no mourning evident, even at the now rather impressive Fradi stadium…

In 1994 Vac became Hungarian Champions . The story of that season mirrors the beautiful reward of Leicester 2 years ago .

Pronounced with a long ‘a’, as in ‘car’. Vác lies a few miles north of Pest.
