This excellent line is probably the only interesting thing about Knutsford.

It’s where Elizabeth Gaskell grew up and it is widely believed that Cranford is based upon it. I listened on audio tape and it brightened up a few journeys round the M25 with its witty take on mid-19th century customs and manners. Not exactly Hardy though, it has to be said.

Referenced by The Macc Lads in Knutsford Scabby Women. I seem to recall reading that Nigel was quite a fan. Of the Macc Lads not Knutsford etc etc

It seems extremely unlikely. There was one interview that mentioned them not unfavourably, but that was at a time when there was maybe a chance that they would have to share a dressing room. Certainly the current Mr. B has no truck with such laddishness and disrespect for the basics (and no, I don’t believe them when they now claim it was some sort of parody of the attitudes they were expressing – it so obviously wasn’t, and there are idiots who still lean on their misogyny and homophobia even today).

That interview went (in irk the purists, reductio ad absurdum style) “I think every band in the world is good. I’m open minded. I like the Macc Lads LP, and I just love Madonna”.

Neil Hamilton. Martin Bell. George Osborne. Esther McVey. Previous four MPs. With the exception of the man in white, that is a genuinely horrible run of representatives.

Even Bell could be deeply disappointing on occasions. But yes, it does make you wonder about the local Conservative Association in that part of the world.
