Am I correct in thinking that Joseph of Arimathea had a wee fling with Mary Magdalene? So perhaps Mal was the result.

I might have stuck Malcolm Muggeridge’s face on there, just by a tenuous association of ideas (I’m not suggesting there’s a reference or a conscious inspiration). Some might remember the pompous Muggeridge being a knob in the 1979 Life of Brian debate on telly; there is obviously a scene relating to Joseph of Arimathea in another film by those off-beat cabaret types; “St. Mugg” (as some critics called him) apparently had Joseph of Arimathea’s epitaph put on his dad’s gravestone. Tried to find a lakeland link but apart from him being a mate of Arthur Ransome …
