“Entering the store, I nodded to an assistant and hurried to the back area of the shop where I could browse in comfort amongst the organised chaos, and marvel at the fact that should it be my desire, I could return home with a Ben Sayers four-iron, a brush doormat bearing the slogan Cofiwch Dryweryn, and an oil painting by Mercy Rimell entitled The Raging Ostler …in addition to the Swarfega, which I finally located on a shelf, next to a box of Hussars, who, in spite of their dusty neglect, appeared primed and ready for Old Boney.”

Widow of the late Fred Rimell, Fred was a NH legend, rode the winner of the famous Devon Loch national on ESB. Gave me my first national winner with Rag Trade. Mrs Rimell took over the licence after Fred died, she trained many winners, most notable was Gaye Brief in the Champion Hurdle; pictured here with jockey Andrew Thornton.

Mercy attended the King’s High School for Girls, Warwick, in the 1920s and ’30s, and used to ride to school from a nearby village, stabling her horse in a road next to Warwick Castle.
