The Pontiff in 2001, when ‘Editor’s Recommendation’ was released, was Karol Wojtyła, (now St) John Paul II. He may be forgiven for not having heard of Slipknot, as their eponymous debut album hadn’t troubled the Italian or Polish charts. (‘Iowa’ did, but didn’t come out until two months after ER.)

Pope Francis recently released an album entitled “Wake Up!” Various reviews have described as from Planet Progrock (q.v.) and, in keeping with the lyrics of Vatican Broadside, Slipknot are not in any way a musical influence.
Erroneously, this album has also been claimed to be the first time that a Pope has released a pop/rock recording. In fact, Pope Paul was the first to do this, releasing “Why Won’t Rangers Sign A Catholic?” in 1979 with his backing band The Romans

Alexander Pope was the master of the heroic couplet. His meisterwerk, The Rape Of The Lock, focused on the rise of acquisitive individualism and a society that encouraged conspicuous consumption. I like to think he’d have appreciated Paintball’s Coming Home.
