Prior to the internet, the only straight ‘personals’ worth doing in the UK seemed to be Soul Mates and Time Out, and both were frankly brilliant at doing what they said on the tin, certainly in the mid-to-late 90s anyway.
My last Soul Mates ad was placed in ’99, using a public phone when I was bored at Heathrow airport, reading the Saturday Guardian and thinking “it’ll be midwinter when I get back and it’d be nice to have some interesting messages waiting for me…”
You could record your message, listen back to it, and then keep changing it till you were happy with it, and to kill time I kept changing the wording till there was about 40 minutes till departure time. Trouble is I’d forgotten that I hadn’t gone through the passport check yet. Big queues. Missed flight, got re-routed. Ended up with unwanted night in Chicago airport and another change in Dallas, which between them are still my only experience of the USA, but got where I was going in the end.
The ad did the trick though, met some great people when I got back (and a scary vicar!), and then the old social life really took off in plenty of other directions anyway.

Wreckless Eric mused on the statistical improbability of actually running into your soulmate, but he was only considering space as the obstacle. What if your soulmate lived in 12th century Japan?
