If you’re on the way to the Worthing gig down the A24 from errm, nearly everywhere else, you probably think you don’t have time for a massive walk round the Downs, but it’s be just a 200 metre diversion to the car park (Storrington Rise/Long Meadow, grid ref TQ129076) for Cissbury Ring, then it’s 10 mins up the hill, 15 max if you’re unfit, to one of the best iron age hill forts anywhere – fab views SW to the IOW or right across the channel, E to Beachy Head, NE to Chanctonbury Ring.
Within a total round trip of 25 minutes you could basically get the whole South Downs vibe, tick, and never have to bother again. (I go up there all the time when I’m at me arl folks ‘cos there’s not much else to do)

Done a lot of running up there in my time too. Chalky turf not the greatest underfoot. Dry, hard. Unyeilding on the downhills.

The village in the picture is Fulking, viewed askance from Devil’s Dyke.
‘Fulking’ is defined in ‘The Meaning of Liff’ as “pretending not to be in when the carol singers come round.”
Not had to fulk for many a year round here.

The closest I ever came to actually winning a marathon was on the South Downs, in a brilliant race called the Three Forts Marathon. I went the wrong way (along with a bunch of others) and we all did three extra miles. Arrgg.
Have also run the South Downs Marathon a few times, once with my dog. He even got a medal for that one. It’s the only time in his 6-year life to date that I’ve ever seen him tired. I had to take a rucksack full of water too as there’s not much by way of ponds, streams etc. round there.
