So… what do we know about Sports Personality of the Year?
Keir Hardie
Seemingly an obtuse way of saying “Sports Person of the Year”, it has often been awarded to someone who is popular, and perhaps not horrible, but who has no notable personality to speak of, in some cases even someone generally being regarded as having a boring one.

‘Sports personality of the year’ was first used as a caption for a photograph of the mercurial gunman ‘Billy The Kid’ laughing in a Mexican cantina. Unfortunately Billy’s behaviour became so erratic that his next images were more ‘Personality of the day’ and like a Lincoln County Geoff Capes he became a wanted man, only without home bred budgerigars.

Deep Blue probably has more personality that quite a few of those winners. Did we really vote for Princess Anne?

No, Sports Personality Of The Year (STOP calling it SPOTY, Balding) is once again in fact an automaton. Has there ever been a greater sporting misnomer?

I really doubt that anyone reading this voted . I am certain that you have no contact with anyone who did . I think Andy Murray won because he got 37 votes .

I was pleased that he won. Strictly business, of course. I had a little tickle way back in August when ‘Happy as Larry’ was at favourable odds.
