Failed goalkeeper (q.v.), mediocre referee (q.v.). As noted by Peter Mc, his support for racist regimes in Southern Africa – to the point of proposing a confederation purely for South Africa and Rhodesia – hastened his own demise. Also first suggested the idea of having the Israeli F.A. affiliate to UEFA, in 1967.

Africa, Asia and Oceania were given one place in the finals between them. The Africans all withdrew in protest. In Asia/Oceania only three countries were involved: Australia and North and South Korea. Because the other two wouldn’t play in North Korea, there was meant to be a round robin tournament in Japan. But then it got moved to Cambodia, so the South Koreans withdrew. So qualifying consisted of two games in Phnom Penh between Australia and North Korea. The Aussies (mostly British ex-pats) prepared at a training camp in Cairns (to acclimatise to the expected humidity) playing warm-up games against local amateurs.
Unsurprisingly the Koreans battered them, winning 9-2 on aggregate.

I watched Derby play at the Baseball Ground the Saturday after he died. In the middle of his minute of memorial silence a solitary shout rang out – ‘Are you watching Stanley Rous?’. Some people…

A slight correction to head off any potential pedants who may inexplicably give a toss – he died in July so the game in which the appallingly disrespectful incident occurred was in all probability the Rams first day of the season 1-0 defeat by Oldham.

Oh, I hope it was to the tune of ‘Can you hear Talvin Singh?’

Not sure there is a tune as such, it’s an adapted droned excerpt from the standard ‘Are you watching Manchester/Liverpool/Nottingham/Arsenal/club or city with 3 syllable name,’ chant.

Dr D & Matt: Cwm Rhondda surely ?

It seems obvious now that it was a proper tune before a terrace chant and having consulted You Tube I can confirm Cwm Rhondda is indeed the tune in question, thanks Flintlock. I’m now going to hang up the washing and go to bed.

Original sixties terrace chant to Cwm Rhondda (Bread of Heaven). Hundreds of versions, one of the first was “??????????, ??????????, You’re not fit to wipe my arse” (???????? Insert name, Player, Ref, Noel Cantwell etc, etc)
