Coming up to 35 years since one of my first games in early 1972, when Tony Waddington’s famous outfit drew an all-time record 24,424 to Prenton Park for the FA Cup 4th round tie (very few of whom were as disappointed not to see Mike Pejic as I was), and drew 2-2. Stoke won the replay comfortably after Rovers’ player manager Ron Yeats – who had scored his 1st Rovers goal in the drawn game – was sent off, and of course Stoke won the League Cup a few weeks later.

Couldn’t believe my luck a few weeks later when me mum said I could have any full replica kit I wanted from the amazing Aladdin’s cave that was Jack Sharp’s in Whitechapel. Replica kits in those days didn’t have badges, sponsors etc, they were just fairly plain approximations. I drooled over every kit they had in my size, before somewhat eccentrically plumping for a Stoke kit. Nobody at school took the piss either.
