The football team is not currently looking for a keeper. Indeed their shot-stopper saved penalties (but no points) in the victorious cup final shoot-out last May against perennial rivals Thorfinn Kirkwall. However Thorfinn won the Orkney Cheese “A”League play-offs in autumn, and if anyone does think they could save Stromness some of those vital points, pre-season training has recently begun in the gloomy Orcadian snows: https://www.facebook.com/stromness.afc
In fact, for 200 years, most of the employees of the Hudson Bay Company (founded by Rupert (q.v.)), were recruited in Stromness. Sarah Millican’s episode of ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ featured the gripping tale of her great, great, great (x?) grandfather who was one such Orcadian Hudsonian in the early C19, and who lost both his feet to frostbite. In fact, if it wasn’t for the Cree Indians, we wouldn’t have to put up with Ms. Millican at all.
In terms of supplying musical inspiration, Stromness perhaps is most noted for a Peter Maxwell Davies composition beloved of the next monarch of these isles.

Incidentally, ‘A Farewell to Stromness’ was made into a favourite piece of ‘classical’ music for me when I listened to a guitar quartet version and then went back to the piano version. Oh and the guitar quartet version also made me think it was probably a big influence on one of my favourite soppy sentimental film soundtracks, a film which shares similar subject matter. Name that film.

Interesting phenomenomomena there by the way, Chris, in that we’ve got a lyric in the A-Z (see top of page) that was set in automatic motion before the light from Proxima Centauri, and has since been corrected on the basis of probability, after a suggestion from even longer ago.

A farewell to Stromness reminds me of the ferry ride from there to Scrabster . Look out the port side early in the journey and the majesty of The Old Man Of Hoy I believe would create a gasp from most humans.

Also evoked squawks from Great Auks, till the Orcs popped all their corks.
Well played Paul, ‘Local Hero’ it was. Even easier to guess what my favourite Orkney dialect bird name is. Yes of course, it’s ‘Little Footy Arse’:

Stromness of course was an essential stopping-off point and watering hole for all those ill-fated expeditions to find the NW passage: http://www.orkneyjar.com/orkney/stromness/largelogins.jpg
