I thought Walmington-on-Sea was located in Thetford, Norfolkshire.

I suppose they haven’t forgotten how to have one, because they don’t have much else to do in Sussex. Basically it was the law for 256 years that every town in the realm had to do what Lewes does. Most other towns stopped burning the Pope along with Guy Fawkes, for example, but Lewes carries on. It’s usually put down to how high profile the commemoration still is of the 17 protestant martyrs who were burned there in 1555-1557, but yeah I reckon it’s ‘cos there’s not been much else to do and ‘cos of that stubborn suvvern conservatism. 4 years ago they burned Angela Merkel doing a Nazi salute; 2 years ago they were about to burn Alex Salmond (thereby associating him with Kim Jong Un, Gaddafi and Bashar al- Assad) when they were told they couldn’t; they blew him up anyway. It’s also the sunniest, driest place in the UK to get your combustibles ready of course.
Nearby of course is much of the inspiration for ‘We Built this Village’. The Coppers still do the Christmas mummers thing at the local pub then round the village.
Is sleepy Sussex ready for HMHB on 17 March? Let’s try to promote it a bit – they wouldn’t want to go all that way for a turn-out like last night’s.

I hasten to add it was the Merkel effigy doing the Nazi salute, not a large portion of the Lewes crowd.
And before we tar all of Sussex with the same brush, it must be said that the order of the 5 main parties in the last election in Lewes is almost exactly reversed in the nearby Brighton Pavilion constituency, a beacon of light in a dark desert of mixed metaphors, etc.
Another beacon of light down there is greatest living Sussexman Attila the Stockbroker. You’ve probably spotted him in the #hmhb twitter feed recently, trying with mixed success to twist hmhb lyrics to have a pop at UKIP’s Pop Nutter [if you’re wondering how this association came about in Attila’s mind, it’s cos amongst Nutter’s history of populist lies is that he used to play for Tranmere, and Attila is as obsessed as any of us with hmhb lyrics].
Anyway, when I say there’s not much to do in sleepy Sussex outside Brighton, Attila himself does many wonderful things to bring great acts to the Sussex coast around Shoreham, including his outstanding annual ‘Glastonwick’ festival that I’ve often plugged on here. Again it’s a beacon of light, and it enables me to stay sane while visiting my old folks down there for an extra 3 days a year that they might not otherwise see me.
Attila has previously brought HMHB to the South Coast, and I know it will frustrate him that their last few appearances down there have not been under his auspices, but good on you Attila we know it’s not for want of trying.

@Charles Exford, was just searching online for Glastonwick this afternoon. Looks like its on again this summer but no details up yet. I don’t suppose there’s any chance of HMHB playing there but what about the Half Arsed lads? Would it suit them? Would they suit it?

Good ideas: I know Attila will have invited HMHB to Glastonwick in the past but they are well beyond the budget and HAHB beyond the remit I think, though doubtless I’ll be telling Attila how good the latter are when I see him there for this year’s bash, yes it’s definite June 2nd-4th, tickets on sale in March.

It’s by the sea.
It also hasn’t existed since 1974.
The East, Middle, South, and West Saxons all throve. The North Saxons did not. There is a reason for that.

Won’t be Druv
Long time lurker, but not had much to add, but have a bit more time on my hands now and being Sussex based thought I’d add a few things.
The birds are indeed Martlets and they are always depicted without legs.
One of the key links with Atilla and HMHB and others was the fight over the planning permission for the Amex stadium following BHA’s asset stripping. That was 20 years ago and this weekend marks the anniversary of the Fans United day, where the Albion beat Hartlepool 5-nil which eventually led to us not being relegated that year.
The Lewes fireworks are odd even to Sussex people 5 miles down the road. Lewes is very local.
Very much looking forward to the Worthing concert; oh and where I live the Irish Parliamentarian CS Parnell married Kitty O’Shea!

20 years!? I was there, singing as the goals went in, a bit pished and did the obligatory bare-chested-with-Tranmere-scarf-around-head at one point. Felt a bit sorry for Hartlepool that day as they were struggling too.
I don’t why you bought the ground,

Might be some interest in this thread, it was right at the start of the internet and it was mainly word of mouth but it was a very emotional day and one for true football fans !

Great stuff. In fact I did find out about Fans United on email/internet in Jan 97, and do even remember posting on some sort of very early Seagulls mailing list or forum at the time.
A very moving day though memories hazed by alcohol – I have half a feeling I might even have spoken to 606 about it. Jees I hope not ‘cos wikipedia tells me that would have been Richard sodding Littlejohn.
I’ve read some good stories on that forum and would like to post. Tried to register and it said an email was on the way – still waiting (junkmail checked).
