I read most of his books when I was a teenager – I remember being very confused when a different translator was used for some of the later books, and they changed the names of some of the characters.

Cream cheese and chives
In my memory he went hand in hand with Isaac Asimov. All those into prog rock would swap these books among themselves, carrying them in the embroidered gas mask bags of which they were all so fond. The Hassels’ covers would feature tanks crushing corpses while the Asimovs would feature strange spider like space craft. Both were closed books to me.
