Possibly the most pleasant service station anywhere in the UK, and certainly the only independently run one. Certainly, if the singer wants to impress Joyce on a long motorway trip, it would be the place to stop, perhaps for a cream tea about half past three – not a letdown.

As alluded to by the sign, services ‘most likely to be accidently bombed by RAF/USAF in training incident’. The northbound side has a Tesla charging facility for people nostalgic for Junk Culture.

The northbound moiety, Tebay West, is the only MSA (as motorway service area fans foppishly call them) with a static caravan (q v) site.

They also run two other services of course, Gloucester and ‘Junction 38’ (the latter for trucks and coaches). And I’d be surprised, given Mr. B’s efforts to promote Tebay over the years, if HMHB haven’t yet been invited to play their lovely Rheged Centre, possibly on a day when they are showing ‘Blencathra’, or even have been asked to provide the soundtrack…

Oh and Cairn Lodge Services. The company’s turnover is fast appoaching 100m and their profits set to leap once their newer ventures are rocking and rolling. You’ll notice they wisely eschew any locations where the antics of coachloads of NW-based supporters can regularly dent their profits.

Rheged was an old proto-Welsh kingdom previously thought to have been centred on what is now Cumbria, but more recent research suggests that it was centred more on Galloway.
Its most famous figure was King Urien, whose successes in battle were celebrated by Taliesin.

There’s just one claim from one excavation at a hillfort in Galloway, near Gatehouse of Fleet (qv), that Rheged “may have been centred” there. There are so many claims about where it may have been centred (including Vindolanda, Carlisle, etc), and I don’t think they are contradictory as it will have been pushed gradually northwards and westwards, and gradually constricted, by the Saxon invaders.
When my folks lived in Deganwy (Conwy estuary, 6th century capital of Gwynedd) I used to stand at the hillfort there looking out to sea and imagining the trade and the messages coming back and forth across the sea from the fellow Brythonic kingdoms of Strathclyde, Rheged, etc. about what the Saxons were up to. It’s easy to see how they would come to hate the way the Saxons encroached and even three centuries later, what was left of those kingdoms were even making alliances with the Vikings to try to push back the Anglo-Saxon entity that was becoming England.
