I always thought my name was fairly uncommon, (not sure if H-Tat agrees) but 4 Tony references so far? (Tonies?). Maybe an award of some kind is appropriate.

The success of Tony Monopoly led to a brief fashion for singers named after board games. Jimmy Cluedo, Steve Scrabble and Vinny Kerplunk all had minor chart hits, and although Les Ludo enjoyed little success in his own right, he later went on to be the in-house songwriter for Factory Records, penning Top 10 hits for Joy Division (q.v.) and Crispy Ambulance (q.v.)

I don’t recall a board coming with Kerplunk (so to speak). The sharp plastic sticks did come in handy though when games in the local Kerplunk League got a bit out of hand.
Prior to becoming a threat to other hairy chested sex symbols , Tony was a carmelite monk who spent his days self flagellating .

On November 15th 1977 Tony Monopoly appeared in cabaret at no less an occasion than the Watford FC Kit Sponsor’s Evening at Bailey’s nightclub. The tickets were £1.50. Sadly there is no record of whether any kind of incident ensued.

Tony Monopoly was born Antonio Rosario Monopoli to Italian parents living in Australia. What a long way from Watford FC in 1977 to his last performance on New Years Eve 1994 at The Grosvenor House in London, prior to his death less than 12 weeks later. ps he did not flagellate
