“Trog” was a term used in the late 1960s, early 1970s on Wirral, and probably lots of other places, to define the kind of teenager who wore a greatcoat and liked bands like Led Zeppelin, Ten Years After and Pink Floyd. The term was used by Mods and skinheads. I was a Wirral Trog and we always had the best looking girls involved in our world. Trogs were a particularly endangered species and were hunted down by the WEBB (Woodchurch End Boot Boys) and NEBB (North End Boot Boys). In 1973 I had a girlfriend who lived on the Ford Estate. My bus journey home to Bromborough took my through NEBB territory. I survived (just).

The North End still looks hard even from a train journey to New Brighton. Only ever dated one Wirral Estate girl, from ‘Nocky’. Is Charlie Wrights house still standing proud on the Ilchester?

He celebrated his 70th birthday there recently I believe, having been born there not long after it was built. The two houses adjoining have now gone so Charlie has fewer opportunities for nationalistic display, and his yellow ‘sun disc’ porch has gone, rather than been sawn in half.
On google earth, it’s one of those ghosts where the satellite shows it as it is now – a construction site – and the street view shows is as it was a couple of years ago – an overgrown development site.
That area had a truly chilling atmosphere of abuse, neglect and fear when I was a kid so it’s good to see it go.

Sorry – for non-locals that made little sense without a link

As for the WEBB, wasn’t the ‘E’ for ‘estate’? It certainly was for the LEBB, from the Leasowe, who were supposedly the naughtiest boys in Wallasey.
