American Alice Duer Miller’s verse novel The White Cliffs (1940), which encouraged US entry into the war, sold almost a million copies. It was made into a film, The White Cliffs of Dover, in 1944. Star Irene Dunne said of it: ‘I don’t think it smacks of propaganda, but if it does, I’m glad. I feel everything possible should be done to cement the friendship between two nations that are most alike and speak the same language.’
The cliffs were also the subject of a wartime song sung by Vera Lynn. (Later made famous by Robson Green [q.v.].)
