It was indeed. I lived there (Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, and before that, Tsaritsyn) for about 6 months in the late 90s and to be honest I can’t recommend a visit. It’s a grey kind of place, rebuilt since the war, and with all the places of interest being war monuments, it can feel a bit oppressive. The battle, which lasted about four months, was unimaginably horrific. I remember chatting to the cleaner at the language school where I worked who had vivid and horrible memories of being evacuated as a child to a village beyond the Volga and looking back to see the river on fire.
