One thousand years ago they were the stonghold of Hereward the Wake and his attempts to halt Norman advancement. A short lived BBC series was eagerly watched by a young Hartlepudlian heralding Herewards adventures .1965 , so I guess I am alone in remembering.

Everyone talks about the amazing skyscapes in the Fens, possibly because the landscape is pretty flat and boring.
The struggle over the huge 17th century project to drain the Fens, with locals losing land and common fishing rights radicalised one Oliver Cromwell, who first made his name fighting for compensation for Fenlanders in Parliament.
Before drainage, the wetlands north of Ely had a bit of a here-be-dragons reputation, and I’m fairly sure there is one medieval text which asserts that the inhabitants had webbed feet.
