Beltane beard
Tough one first up; both very funny and worthy of their place in the last 16.
After much deliberation, I have decided to go with Dukla Prague for no other reason that Sour Cream and Chive Pringles have never existed to my knowledge, whereas virtually every goal in Subutteo games I played as a youngster was indeed a controversial spot kick.

Last minute winner for Dukla Prague, but what a tie.

Dukla is Legendary a easy 3 – 0 win

Cygnus
Really tough one; DPAK was my introduction to HMHB and will always hold a special place but I love seeing Garage performed live, always great fun. Penalty shoot-out and I’m watching through my fingers
DPAK take it 11 – 10 .

It appears that I find myself supporting the plucky underdog in this tie. 24HGP for me

Two fat feet
Probably the toughest one of the round for me to choose between; hugely fond of both for exactly the same reasons as Cygnus.
By the narrowest of margins (simply because the live version at Shepherd’s Bush in 2011, my first HMHB gig, still makes me smile like I’ve never heard it before), 24HGP gets the nod from me, but I’m predicting DPAK to make it through with 52%.

Live a tough call.
On record, no contest. I favour Dk to go a long way with the right draw.

Mine too TFF but despite the barbecue line, it’s DPAK for me.

Not easy, but Dukla Prague takes this one.

Brutal. My toughest tie of the round. Two of my favourites. Sudden death listen-off to decide.

I’ve considered this very carefully, and gone for the one which I first heard on Monday 9 December 1985 (not the original broadcast).
I love 24HGP as well though.

When do votes close in this round? I will need some time to consider (or failing that I’ll just flip a coin)

I’ll put up one match each day, and leave each vote open for 7 days from when it went up, so we don’t have some matches getting a much longer voting period than others. Let’s see how that works.

Dickhead in quicksand
Argh this is a horrible decision to have to make. Not least because I’ve often imagined that the kid with the Scalextric and Subbuteo got sacked by the DHSS and ended up working in an all-night garage.
I first heard DPAK in 1985 on Peel’s show; and thought, How the fuck does this guy know so much about my childhood? (No, not Peel – do pay attention.) But then again, I’m a sucker for Lead Belly, and 24HGP is an epic.
I’m voting for …

Audrey’s Euphemism
I’ve voted for the song that I think will lose by a whisker, so I can have the pleasure of knowing I backed the underdog while enjoying the fact I predicted the winner. On t’other hand, I’ll have backed a winner and can lament the demise of the favourite.
Sad that there has to be a loser out of these two, if I’m honest. Right, I’m off to scoff ten kit-kats while ruminating over a motoring atlas now…

I love both of these songs. But I’m going for 24HGP on principle as I don’t like the idea of the first HMHB song I ever heard being voted the best.

Audrey (if I may address you thus, never mind that I suspect you would have contributed to the demise of my personal favourite) – a pessimist is never disappointed.

DPAK if only for the night in Leicester in about 1993 when the power was cut off by the Charlotte but Nigel still came back on and did this with full acapella audience backing

Like others, I’m going for 24 Hour Garage People because of the live versions. Can’t think of another song where so many people at a gig go quiet in case they miss a good line.
12 November 2015
counterblast to Agnosticism
I’m voting for my kids as the next generation of fans (whether they like it or not). That and the rather wonderfully evocative “now you become quite irate”.
12 November 2015
Grze
the toughest tie of the last 16 but in the end it’s Dukla that gets the cherry

Nagasaki shinpads
Back to Manchester Uni and visions of an overweight mother teetering on the loft ladder…got to go for DPAK as I don’t like Marmite!

24HGP for, among other things, the awesome delivery of “What sandwiches have you got?”

PAT BOONE ON THE COUNTY BASSOON
went for 24HGP but it was a close one. Maybe it was the Blue CD on the Hallmark label which meant it had to be good.

A toughie! Went for DPAK because it describes exactly what happened every rainy day during my childhood Summer holidays from school.

Neil Caplan
DPAK was the song that made me like HMHB, I used to play it on my (on tape) radio show and I must be the only person in the HMHB universe who don’t go gaga for garage people

Dave Wiggins
After a solid rearguard action, and backed by a travelling army of 675, a late winner for ’24 Hour Garage People’ from this correspondent.

(captured for posterity just in case – CtSO)
The listing is for “chives”, the packaging only mentions “onion”, but the graphic show green pieces that can only be chives. I think we can give the band the lyrical benefit, and hence 24HGP wins out!
