Two real gems here, both deserve to go further but alas one must fall.
ANL is a very infectious and clever song with a wonderful dark undertone but the lyrical brilliance of NSD wins the day for me here, especially as I can’t pass a Boots nowadays without watching for someone careering out of it.

Very very easy decision. One of them is fairly skippable filler – you can guess the rest.

The day will come when ANL is recognised as the band’s finest moment.

Even though it is not my favourite, for some reason NSD is the one I want to – and think will – win the whole thing. It’s got the best chance of representing the band in the European LFC Winners’ Cup.

Two fat feet
It will take a formidable opponent to topple NSD, and I just don’t see it being Asparagus. It’s a good bit of fun and understandably popular, but I can only see it being blown away here. NSD with a comfortable 70% of the vote.

EXXO
I’d set the spread at 83%.

ANL has the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse in its ranks (cunningly concealed under a crossword clue, reportedly), so Stringy Bob and co. need to guard against complacency. And the man in black will be operating a strict “no time-wasters” policy, so think on if you’re clinging to a slender lead going into the last ten minutes.
It may be a little closer than anticipated, but the Grease one should come out on top in the end.

Audrey’s EUPHEMISMS
Fairly obvious which way I’m voting in this match. I was heartily disappointed that ANL didn’t make it past the qualifiers last time round. Fingers crossed for a form book upset!

An easy decision indeed. My birthday!

NSD hands down.

National Shite Day is as significant and astute chronicling of its time as anything by Guthrie or Dylan. ANL is a fantastic song but there can only be one winner here and NSD has to be the winner of the competition if the true importance of the music is to be recognised.

NSD by a mile, One of the lads finest moments. From the rail replacement service masterstroke through inconsiderate shoppers failing to embrace the margin to Stringy Bob wondering whether he had indeed found Phil Cool’s sanderling. total inspired genius

83% isn’t a spread. Unless it’s a special promotion.
ANL for all the reasons people like the other one. Hmhb are not billy fucking Bragg thankfully despite spotify seemingly to think they are related.

In many circumstances, ANL would be a hot pick…but then I encountered Primark FM

Oo, much tougher than ACP vs TR. I love em both. I’ve gone for Shite but may later rue it.

No doubts on this one. Backing what I hope will be the winner. Is this your sanderling?

On Sunday, while making breakfast, within 30 seconds the fridge door dropped off, then I knocked over the coffee pot, scalding my hand and filling drawers and flooding the floor with coffee and coffee grounds, which then took about half an hour to clean up, by which time my bacon was flat cold , so November 15th MUST be National Shite Day.- Well one of them anyway.

Heavy heart voting against ANL. In this case, the “best” criterion outweighs “favourite”.

I’m a massive fan of Asparagus Next Left (using initials there would’ve prompted a “that’s what she said”), but I simply can’t vote against NSD. From the opening lines to the tales of Stringy Bob at the end it encapsulates so much about why I love HMHB.

National Shite Day is the running commentary on my life.

I love Asparagus Next Left. I really do. I think it’s absolutely brilliant. Especially the opening lines:
We’ve just been performing a guerrilla gig
In the middle of another group’s guerrilla gig
Well surely that’s the ultimate guerrilla gig
But still they cried like girls
I laugh every time. What a great scene to imagine.
So I was going to use that whilst trying to make an argument for ANL over National Shite Day. Then I remembered NSD’s opening line:
Pulling the ice axe from my leg, I staggered on, spindrift stinging my remaining eye
Seriously, that is the greatest opening line in the history of writing. I don’t care what kind of writing you want to talk about – songs, poems, essays, movies, novels, plays, hieroglyphics, whatever – I defy anyone to cite a greater opening line than that. I stagger on, just contemplating it.
Having said all that, I went ahead and cast a pity vote for Asparagus. NSD seems to be an unstoppable freight train* on its way to the title, so I thought I’d throw a feeble sop to a lovable but over-matched kid. O, Asparagus Next Left, we hardly knew ye.
*Unless another certain train-related song can derail it?
