CtSO, before I say anything else, thank you. It’s been great fun and superbly organised.
The question I’ve been itching to ask for the past week is whether you can tell how the finalists fared when they squared up in the Baguette Dilemma Round, which seems about a decade ago?
(Thanks! I’m just putting together the “story of the tournament” page which will include the full table from the BDR – CtSO)

I certainly echo the thanks to CtSO. What a tremendous competition!
At the end of it all I feel very mellow. I voted for one but the result doesn’t really upset me or thrill me. Both finalists are grand songs.
I am feeding police horses sugarlumps while wearing one of those stupid half and half scarves. The Light At The End Of The Tunnel Is National Shite Day.

This should be in the “voting” thread really, and is entirely in the spirit of the “William Hills” thread, but @CHOOSE LIGHT
Nuff respect.

I voted for Shite, but what can you say against Light? It’s got wistful bits and stompy bits. It has a hidden, dry-as-dust joke referencing the plague of 1665. It deploys the word ‘swain’ with aplomb. It’s very good live. A superb tune and a worthy winner.
Of the match-ups from the Baguette Dilemma round, can I suggest “Dickie Davies Eyes Lord Hereford’s Knob” for the Finbarr Saunders Memorial Cup?

GORDON BURNS
A consistent turnout.
And for the first time in my voting life, I’ve backed a winner.
Thanks CtSO, for such biscuity entertainment.

OK, here it is – the full tournament review. See the complete Baguette Dilemma round (there’s even a spreadsheet for those who wish to investigate the data further) and remind yourself of the highlights of 10 weeks of family fun.

One thing is certain – or at least fairly likely – and that is that the next band I see live will be any band which played its 186th and 146th most popular songs at their last gig.

Hands up if you voted Light because you didn’t want the same song to win twice…
Huge thanks to CtSO. That was great fun! On to 2023…

There’s enough shite all around right now, good to have a bit of light at he end of the tunnel. I grew fonder of Shite re listening to it for the voting but I still think of it as a period piece showing its age, Light is couplet central and a better example, for me, of why HMHB are so special. Here’s hoping there’s another album or three before the next Lux Familiar. Good stuff!

Many thanks CtSO. Oh what japes we had! Good job there isn’t a “Burly Physio Of Non-League” to play for.

Contrary to popular demand, presenting the post-tournament rankings under the same formula as applied to previous tournaments. Without going into a full explanation (which was given last time round for those who had the stamina, or just needed some help to sleep), it basically compares the popularity of songs based on their performance against each other this time round, from which it can be implied how any two songs from the last 32 might have performed had they met. Should further explanation be needed, a couple of observations below might help.
Light (W) 1000
AOR (QF) 916
NSD (F) 878
Bell (SF) 825
Chatteris (QF) 804
JDOG (2) 735
Trumpton (2) 687
24HGP (SF) 659
Trad Arr (1) 640
DPAK (2) 611
Vagaries (QF) 597
ACP (2) 594
Terminus (2) 589
Eno (1) 522
Checkatrade (1) 518
Dickie (1) 498
Knobheads (1) 481
Evening Sun (1) 458
Wilson (2) 451
Westward Ho! (1) 437
TUCOLO (2) 426
Bad Wools (1) 421
Tending (QF) 408
Restless (2) 397
Outbreak (1) 396
Asparagus (1) 390
Paintball (1) 389
Leeuwarden (1) 354
Swing (1) 345
Damnation (1) 318
Stiperstones (1) 316
Gwatkin (1) 303
AOR is placed second having run the eventual winner the closest during the tournament, and thus might well have beaten the actual runner-up had they been drawn together at any point. Trad Arr Tune will be lamenting its tough draw in the first round, while Tending The Wrong Grave could be said to have made a little go a long way by virtue of a couple of fortunate draws before getting its arse properly kicked, hence its low rating. Still with us? My apologies.
(Don’t apologise – this is brilliant – CtSO)

Congratulations to the winner and I can only echo others’ thanks to CtSO _ it may be a labour of love but it still requires plenty of labour. The final line of Light also wins my own ‘most often recurring ear worm’ prize, closely followed by ‘i can put a tennis racket up against my face…etc’

@bobbysvarc if you’re referring to me – I probably won’t be on here much (I decided to step back a bit years ago when I saw that I’d posted twice as much as anybody else over the previous twelve months).

Many thanks for hosting this CtSO – the chance to re-listen to so many of these great songs has boosted a fabulous summer. I could do it all over again (if only to find out a way to depose the 2 finalists)

TFF: interesting to compare your post-tournament rankings with the Baguette Dilemma Round. The song which jumps out is Evening Of Swing, which came an impressive third there, but collapsed in the knockout stage, losing immediately to number 12 seed Restless Legs, which then lost to number 13 seed Wrong Grave …presumably accounting for its poor ranking. It’s clear that some songs are geared up for the knockout stages!
If we look at the tournament by seedings (based on Baguette Dilemma Round):
Final – Seed number 5 beat seed number 1
Semi Finals – 1 beat 7; 5 beat 10
Quarter Finals – 1 beat 20; 7 beat 13; 10 beat 17; 5 beat 2
…most ties went with form, the upsets only being Light (number 5 seed) beating both AOR (2) and Shite (1). Clearly Light learned from last time and has perfected its knockout stage performances.

Yes, EoS’s poor showing in the finals was the first thing I noticed. Other were that Trumpton and JDOG, despite early exits, both still scored highly, but I really never thought of Eno Collaboration as a band classic.

An update for Exxo’s FOI request – I announced voting in the final was open on Twitter, Facebook and by email, in that order. Twitter sent through 125 people, Facebook 182 (nearly all on mobile devices, interestingly) and the email (to just over 1000 people) an impressive 428. A further 69 people found the page directly on Google, which is interesting, as the page wouldn’t have been indexed straight away.

IDIOT SAUL
Woke up this fine morning to discover that Light had conquered Shite in the final. So, in tribute, me and the missus plus the faithful hound went wandering the Peaks. Strange as it may seem, Eyam wasn’t plagued by celebrating fans, open top buses etc, but it was bathed in sunshine and glory. A cuppa in the tea rooms then a walk down to Stoney Middleton for fish, chips and mushy peas in what is apparently the only Grade II listed chippy in the land. My thanks also to CtSO. Matlock Bath tomorrow?

Amusing Epithet
Thrilled that TLATEOTT has triumphed. It’s a favourite of mine and not only because my team beat Cammell Laird 1907 FC in the shadow of the social club last season (6-2). I’m a recent convert to HMHB and the recent gig at the Picturedrome was my first. Since then I’ve made the fairly seismic discovery that THE ACTUAL David Lloyd works in my office. I’m still processing this information and the fact that I’ve spent the last 3 years unknowingly toiling in the same orbit as one of the greats. He’s left for the night now so I’m off to stare at his chair…

Based on the same metrics as my analysis of BDR places 33-205, here is the breakdown for the full figures:
Achtung 147.14
Creative Hub 142.38
Cammell Laird 139.46
90 Bisodol 137.58
Back In The DHSS 129.38
CSI 129.31
Urge 109.38
Trouble 105.56
McIntyre 104.30
Voyage 97.43
Back Again 96.88
This Leaden Pall 81.40
non-album 62.19
Four Lads 50.46
Godcore 49.17
So, adding the last 32’s stats in means that Achtung edges past Crestive Hub into 1st place, with Cammell Laird & 90 Bisodol not too far behind, and Four Lads – by use of A Country Practice – move up to leave Godcore last.
Finally, I add my thanks to CtSO and his crack(ed) team for their efforts.

Very happy with the result, and a significant final boost for Light over its BDR placing. I’m putting that down to many of us having that constantly going through our heads on a wet Friday 2 weeks ago in Castleton. Genius gig scheduling there by the Light loving promoter. NSD fans are probably already sounding out various branches of Millets for instore potential in 4 years time.

Thanks again to Chris for organising this contest, and really big thanks to (can’t remember) who compiled the Spotify playlist. It’s on constantly and my wife is giving me grief, but hey!. Really glad that TLATEOTT won in the end, proper song, you can hear all the words and it has a tune you can whistle to (not tried whistling to NSD, might give that a go later). Thanks for the nod in the notes.
PS Still smarting about Terminus.

I have never been into a band before whereby my favourite song changes on average every two to three weeks. My current fave is Get Kramer which to my mind is a work of utter genius, and yet it performed so badly in the BDR. This makes me feel quite special lol,

Belated thanks to CtSO for all the organising that went into making this a fun distraction from the shitshow that the UK has become.
Pleased with the result although ironically NSD is probably the most appropriate song for the zeitgeist
Neither song as good as Terminus though 😉
