The Trumpton Riots
vs.
Friday Night And The Gates Are Low
Only three songs remain from the first five albums/ten years, and, thanks to this tie, one of them’s going to make the last eight. Or one of them isn’t, if you want to look at it that way.

Friday Night And The Gates Are Low 100

As straightforward a home win as they come.

Agreed. I’m amazed FN&TGAL got this far. No giant killing here, I predict.

Trumpton runs riot!!

TWO FAT FEET
Not greatly bothered who wins this one, like them both but neither are high on my list of favourites.
If I was being logical I suppose I should vote for Friday Night, given that it would be consistent with how I voted in the first round with both songs, but I feel Trumpton is more deserving of its place in the last eight.

I like FN&TGAL, but it’s up against a bona fide classic in Trumpton. It’s just a question of how large the margin of victory will be.

I’m going to respectfully disagree. Someone else mentioned that our little competition has made them reassess and re-appreciate certain songs, and that’s happened for me with two in particular, one being “Friday Night”. It really is the best song about football supporting ever written, and I’d never given it the credit it deserves. For that reason alone it gets my vote.

Gonna have to agree with Chris. Mighty though the Trumpton Riots is, I feel I have to vote for Friday Night. Being a Charlton fan, it rings true in so many, many ways…

Trumpton set the ball rolling an’ all that, but……. they got better, as Friday Night shows.

Lee’s Twenty First
“When I had my loft
Converted
Back into a loft …”
My favourite opening line (or couple of lines) of all. That and the fact that I’d fed up hearing comments like ‘… aren’t they the ones who did that song about Trumpton? What was it, again …? Are they still going? …” Away win.

men vs boys. chippy minton socialist too good a line to go out this close to the final. Trumpton it is by a country mile

BIG CON
I agree with Two Fat Feet on this one as both of these won local derbies against my teams. Presumably Dukla Prague have been thrown into round 4 of some European cup.
Now edging towards Friday Night because they’re keeping the ball on the deck as opposed to Trumpton who just hoof it upto Captain Snort.

Look Dad No Tunes
Got to agree with Chris here, it’s a football song that gets that football wasn’t invented in 1992.
Mind you, Trumpton Riots is utterly brilliant too.
I still haven’t decided on this one…

I can’t stand any more, Cos I can’t stand any more.
Succinctly sums up a generation’s disillusionment with the game in one sentence..

“Little competition” Chris? The nation waits with baited breath!
Got to be “Trumpton” FNATGAL has done well to make it thus far; losing here will enable it to concentrate on “reaching the next level” in the league.

The easiest tie of the round for me I think – FNATGAL may have stood a chance with home advantage – small pitch, comparatively ancient facilities, not to mention the ferocious home support based in that terraced stand which reminds me of the Racecourse Ground.
Away to Trumpton though? Not a prayer.
On a side note I see the police have advised away fans traveling by train to head directly to the stadium and avoid disembarking in or around Chigley…

This may sound like blasphemy but I’m not that keen on Trumpton. Friday Night is a much better song, in my opinion. The opening line is one of the best, the riff is immediately engaging, the lyric is superb. What more could you want?

You’re not alone, Neil, I too am a blasphemer! Trumpton was a riot the first few times I heard it but to me the joke wears a bit thin (like my hair) after a while. The concept of a riot in Trumpton is mildly amusing but to my mind, that’s all the song has going for it. Friday Night, on the other hand, as some people have mentioned, sums up so much of what is wrong in football these days so it gets my vote. Bring back standing on the terraces, Bovril at half time, dogs on the pitch and jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it?

P.S. The village of Roslin in Midlothian is famous for three things: The Roslin Institute where Dolly the sheep was cloned, Roslin Chapel of ‘Da Vinci Code’ / Knights Templar fame and for being the birthplace of the inventor of Bovril. Can’t remember his name and can’t be arsed to Google it, but there’s one of those blue plaques on the house where he was born telling you of his momentous contribution to the game of football.

I fear Friday Night has met it’s match, but I absolutely love this song and it gets my vote and a little prayer that there are enough fans of the underdog to let it sneak through.
Am I supposed to be at home?

Bobby, there’s now also a cafe in Roslin commemorating John Lawson Johnson’s invention. And yes, sadly, I did make a special trip to go there.

Love the Abba pun in the title of FN but the ridiculously funny concept of Cant Conformism nails it for me.

I’m outvoted yet again… Never been a huge fan of Trumpton Riots. The title and the concept were always the best bit of it for me. Friday Night is a great little tune, nicely played, brilliant sentiment, and I agree with “Lee’s 21st”, the opening verse is one of their best I think.

@ Dave Cooper.
I used to live about three miles north of Roslin, in the shadow of the City of Edinburgh bypass, so I spent a lot of time in Roslin. Nice little village and the glen was a great place to walk the dog. Didn’t know about the café though, must have appeared after I left (about 10 years ago). Does it serve nothing but cups of Bovril and Bovril sandwiches?

Bruiser McHuge (Trumpton Town Halls’ chief bouncer) had me in a head lock on this one, so i had no choice really. TR all the way to the final, if only to see the Chigley Skins invade the home end.

A real toughie. Going to side with Friday Night… on the grounds that it probably matches my opinion greater than any other HMHB song.
