Joy Division Oven Gloves
vs.
The Bastard son of Dean Friedman
Two live favourites which have been prominent in the HMHB story in the last year or so, for different reasons.
Result
Joy Division Oven Gloves 189
vs.
The Bastard son of Dean Friedman 128
BIG CON
1st shot so my team are winning.
Home win.

An early equaliser for The Bastard!
Tough decision, this one, but the Bilston gig lives fresh in my mind, so for sentimental reasons – certainly not for DF’s lyrical crafting of his retort – I’ll shall go for TBSODF.
Incidentally, does anyone remember a jockey from the 70s called Michael Bastard?

Two Fat Feet
Hmmm, tough one because they’re two songs from very different eras, both of which are highly regarded, and neither of which I could give a monkey’s about meself.
I go with the Bastard because I probably liked it the better of the two on their respective first listens.

TBSODF – for the excellent pronunciation of “borussia moenchengladbach”

Whether its the bitterness of JDOG beating Trad Arr. in the last round or the fact the Bastard Son is the only song I know to have successfully Ryhmed “mocked me in my mocks” with “emboidered in my socks” (there may be others, but I’ve yet to hear them), it has to be Bastard Son, And that’s even without being at the Bilston gig. I was there a couple of years earlier though, for Mark E. Smiths 50th, that venue gets all the big shows!

BIG CON
Does anyone know if the band have any idea about this competition?

This has become unbearably difficult. What’s next– the Crunchie v. the Flake? Two completely different tunes, both equally brilliant and utterly absurd.
Any song that seamlessly (no pun) incorporates the word “embroidered” is a work of art, but for me, “Oven Gloves” takes the chequered flag.
‘Allelujiah…

Look Dad No Tunes
I’ve gone with Bastard, but I’ll be happy with either winning, both great.

Been a bit of a JDOG backlash on here in recent rounds. Well I love it, so despite the craziness of Bilston, it gets my vote.

I love JDOG. It’s big, cheerful, clever, and builds up to that exhilarating DANCE crescendo that’s hard to beat. It’s good in the studio and it’s magical live.
I loved the Bilston thing, but I don’t really like the Bette Midler unpleasantness, and overall the song’s not in the same league.

2 deal breakers.
1: The best line about pretend exams.
2: JDOG upsetting my beloved Trad Arr.
Bastard wins.

Well the post punk postcard fair seals it for me… JDOG it is.

Bastard son is a classic that has stood the test of time, and just like trumpton one of the bands best known and loved tunes,but…..the energy and genius of joy division oven gloves gets the injury time winner 🙂

Evenly matched with JDOG the more attacking formation. But despite a double playoff it still comes down to Bilston. Deano through thanks to the lack of goal line technology.

Easy – Bastard Son often pops into my head whilst I’m in the shower.
“Even though he showed me his Magritte”. Heh.
Surprised JDOG got this far tbh

Well the gloves are off… and “The Gloves” is off
Go you beautiful Bastardo!

The second one this round to go to the dreaded penalty ‘most plays on the jump-proof iPod’ shoot-out. Friedman by 10 plays to 8.

This decision is, to quote Burt Kwouk, “Very tough as old boots”! I voted for both of these in their respective matches last round and I love both for very different reasons. However, in the end I went with JDOG for the bits where Nigel flawlessly pairs seemingly random words such as “Nagasaki towpath” and “Piccalilli shinpads”. You have to give the guy kudos (as opposed to kudus which are large African antelopes) even for just getting those words into a song. It was tough though, “Supercalafragilisticborussiamunchengladbach” almost scored a last minute injury time equaliser. Sorry Deano, you’ve had a good run but it’s time to go.

It was just a rumour and she’s OK now, Vote for Dean Friedman.

Voted against JDOG last round on the grounds that its overrated.
But I’m voting for it this round on the grounds that I’ve always thought TBSODF is a bit overrated.
I can excuse it any way I want, I suppose. The simple truth is that I prefer JDOG.

Damn ! Worst one for me so far in the entire competition. Can I abstain ?

One of the most difficult rounds, bloody ‘ell… SO fond of Dean Friedman for so many years, but I think the fabulously absurd but beautifully logical image of keeping wicket for the quakers gets it.. 4-3 on penalties.

How strange.
I find JDOG over familiar and overhyped…..
Bilston was a scream and I’ve been happily listening to TBSODF for 25 years…….
So why the hell did I just vote for the Gloves? It can only be that this band get better and better, and the relatively average newer stuff trumps the better older stuff. Just sayin’…….

Ferenc Puskás to you
Any song that spawns it’s own utterly unique fashion accessory….

Bastard for me. Hard though so on balance….
JDOG’s says a lot about how we behave now we’ve grown up. TBSODF is about the days before we had. Mary Poppins, canals and Piccalilli in one tune.
