Paintball’s Coming Home
vs.
Them’s The Vagaries
Paintball fought through to this round by the tiniest of margins, and Vagaries wasn’t that comfortable either. Will this round be any different?

Its the Vagaries for me … What I call pleasure – you may call pain ~ I’m talking 5 day testss … Away win , Paintballs going home

TWO FAT FEET
Need to remember exactly what we’re voting for here. If it’s for the greatest track, it would be Paintball as it has the greater status with its numerous versions and live pedigree.
However, the campaign against non-original melodies carries some worth and Vagaries is indeed greater in terms of musical merit, plus uniqueness in subject matter. Paintball’s subject has been covered many terms in the HMHB canon, either whole songs or parts of songs devoted to attacks on pretentiousness.
Anyway, it’s for our favourite songs that we’re voting, and I like Vagaries better.

Has to be PCH for me. Vagaries never really hit the spot for me.
My sister used to have an Annie Lennox poster & bought that awful xmas record she did last year, so I’ll dedicate my vote to her…

If this were a boxing match it would be stopped to save “Paintball” further punishment.

BIG CON
A 4 v 4 draw on the i-pod at 90 minutes.
I have been a linesman but couldn’t execute the defenders because they were my team.
So a lovely through ball from Lexicographers sees Octopus beat the offside trap and slide in the winner.

difficult, but paintball is playing with an extra man due to there being alternative versions of the said song….shame, but paintball won due to the extra man,but only just 🙂

Guys – really enjoying the Lux Familiar Cup, it’s a fine effort and well done for putting it all together. Looking forward to the quarters ……..

I think there’s a bit too much analyzing going on in this cup so it’s eenie meenie & TTV won the tie for me, for me, for meeeeee

Close, but it has to be Paintball. The “if I were a linesman” interpolation brought it home deep into injury time

The Lux Familiar has really opened my eyes to the true worth of Vagaries. Poignant, funny, and very clever, I hope it goes all the way.

Tension building on this – it’s worse than FA cup! Paintball for me.

Shit Man
This one had me wandering aimlessly through my local park for hours! After checking my shed I found I had a slight leaning towards the vagaries!

Egg sandwiches on coach trips in June
I simply won’t be there

if it’s extra versions I’m sure Thems the Vagaries has 2 couple of versions one has a replacement for “I’m talking 5 day tests”
As very entertaining as Paintball is – Thems The Vagaries is just the better song with a big bass line, better lyrics and less derivative tune
so 3-1 victory to Vagaries

I do keep a torch in my car as you never know when it’ll come in useful.
I proved this to myself this weekend in Devon when I desperately needed a torch… and then I remembered taking it out of the car.
On the other hand, I’ve just bought a fine Flymo hover mower-£39.99 from Argos.
So it’s Paintball for reminding me of just how ludicrous life can be.

Vagaries all the way – 5 day tests, joke shop excrement, sheepskin nosebands …

I laughed my nuts off the first time I heard Paintball and am tempted to vote for the bloon, but Vagaries is a cracker and original and egg sandwiches on coach trips in June and I’ve been saving these things just for you…

I’m with Matlock Bath ! TTV for me. Easiest one in a while.

I’m shocked at how easy I found this tie in the end – Vagaries for me!
23 May 2011
Sean Macreavy
I knew you’d go for Vagaries, Seany O! Some of these ties leave me feeling a bit inadequate, obviously I’m a superficial belly-laugh hound… Still don’t really get TTV… But shouting paintball on acoustics once a year, with added random alt verses, is a true highlight of my year, so executed defenders it is I’m afraid.
23 May 2011
Seany O
Sean – that’s makes the world interesting. Not long now until our yearly acoustic fun and games – all together now, “i fancy I’ll open a stationers…”

Unfortunately no champagne in a hot air balloon if the comments reflect the votes. Consolation tap-in for Paintball here.

Noooo!
Do I just not vote? I can’t be a party to the elimination of one of my faves can I?
Oh go on then… but it’s an unfortunate 98th minute own goal for PCH…

i take it we are voting for the original PCH and not the one with the brilliant line about the cat choosing them? anyway as i will soon have to find pubs with ball parks for the kids my vote goes to vagaries as its the only song i know with lexicographers in it.

@ Rioter – I’d say we should definitely take into consideration all aspects of live experiences and variations on lyrics. Not that it’ll save PCH in this round I imagine, but I’ve been surprised how few pundits have been citing the impact of their selections in a live environment as part of the reason for their votes.
Anyway, there’s that line, and there was also the version somewhere (here – Ed) where Nigel added “…and the cat’s got it’s own website.” A line which has tugged at my conscience recently and is solely responsible for (so far) saving our new puppy from getting his own blog and sparing the world from being told about it. It’s probably just a matter of time I’m afraid, but at least he’s not a canine cliché yet. Thankfully I have am never likely to be tempted by any of the other foibles castigated in either of these great songs.
I think it was during the last round where one voter actually said he thought Corgi Registered Friends was the zenith of the “please don’t tell me about the crap ways you spend your money” genre, but surely this match will prove that the stretch limo is the ultimate contemporary symbol of wankerdom.

Errm, ignore that list bit, for a mad medal-winning red moment I thought Paintball was up against Evening of Swing.
After a mere 4 months and 1,300 comments worth of contoversy I feel like I’ve slipped reluctantly off my fences, but I reckon only the likes of Chatteris beating 24HGP and then looking like it had a chance against NSD could have done that.
