Running Order Squabble Fest
vs.
When The Evening Sun Goes Down
Another apparent mismatch between a song which absolutely waltzed through its qualifying group and one which was only a fastest loser, albeit one of the stronger ones. But this one might be closer than it seems.

The intro to WTESGD is a real ear worm, so I had it as a ringtone. ROSF is good, but not as good, so an easy choice this one. It’s a sort-of Premier League v my favourite lower league team. Generally entertaining, but only one outcome.

@ Brum. And I thought I was the only sad bar-steward to have HMHB songs as ring tones [I’ve got Monmore at the mo!]
It’s WTESGD for me. We have this as a family sing-a-long in the car, well I do!!

At last an easy choice! If only for the Mark Chapman line this would win.

Any song that contains the line “you’re going on after Crispy Ambulance’ deserves to win the tournament. One of my top 5 Biscuit songs.
“half past four? half past four?”

Evening Sun because;
It’s the only Biccie track to feature a flute.
The hummed introduction on the Kershaw session when no flautist was available is inspired.
Of the insanity of steeple cursing.
It correctly identifies the 3 things that are ruining many a small British town.
Of getting the word ‘ennui’ into a song.
It laments the loss of traditional Pub names and their replacement by pretentious nonsense.
It rhymes ‘Pat Boone’ with ‘county bassoon’.
Of Kershaw laughing at the ‘Judie Tzuke’ line.
The lines ‘Are these my ultimate pyjamas?
Is this my final dressing gown?’ are possibly the greatest meditation on the transitory nature of the Human condition since the Venerable Bede stopped rattling on about sparrows flying through mead halls on stormy nights.

Sounds like a recorder, to me.

Has to be Squabble fest

I shouldn’t really vote for Squabble Fest as it brings back horrific memories of having to suffer Chas & Dave as the opening support act at the 1979 Knebworth Festival, and the ‘Bootleg Mark Chapman’ line is, after all, a classic. However, what tipped it on favour of Squabble Fest, despite the aforementioned psychological scars, was the ‘sound man’ line and the Crispy Ambulance chant.
I can see why people are finding it a tough choice though.

This has just made me realise how much I love WTESGD. Line for line it kicks Squabblefest off the park. Even with a screamer from Crispy Ambulance it’s not enough to beat one of the most completely perfect lyrics by anyone.

Can’t remember whether I even voted for Evening Sun in the qualifiers, although I also had it as my ringtone for a while. But I voted for so many on Cammell Laird, I had to stop somewhere.
Running Order Squabble Fest is fantastic, the sort of title that inspired a letter to The Word a few months ago, when they started headlining letters with wonderfully over-concise descriptions of their contents. Gloriously punked up and with a suitably manic vocal. The Crispy Ambulance line seals it, even for one who had never heard of them at the time.

The Crispy Ambulance line alone is enough to won it for Squabble Fest for me

Think I’m gonna have to abstain on this one. Sorry.
Come back to me if it’s a tie.
(Actually, no, don’t do that)

It’s funny because I was singing the line about Mark Chapman to myself this morning but Squabble fest with the Crispy Ambulance chorus is just the best. Also the bit about CND & Chas & Dave
