Evening Of Swing (Has Been Cancelled)
vs.
Bad Losers on Yahoo Chess
Our first local derby, featuring two songs from CSI:Ambleside, and one which could go either way, as the 20th song in the voting (and second place song from that album) takes on the 24th song in the voting, a fastest loser.

That was a hard one to choose from .Two classics from a classic album.

Painful decision to make, but Evening Of Swing scrapes it by virtue of the marginally better tune. Fag paper stuff.

I love the Deep Blue and Shackleton stuff in Bad Losers but time to get ruthless I’m afraid. It’s essentially a one joke song. Whereas Evening of Swing is a lyrical masterpiece. A song that just keeps on giving. SatNav bit is inspired. Flowers round speed limit sign – too true. Ezekiel punching Dan Brown – one of my favourite HMHB images. But the clincher is ‘the knights are drawing in’. Note that the lyrics on here still read ‘nights’. Beware the Prieuré de Sion. Update it before it’s too late.

Evening of Swing for me. Bad Losers has grown on me the last few weeks but the former has a cracking arrangement and tune and some fantastic poetry. And great gags such as the sat nav. Choon.

A tricky choice indeed this one. I can see the point about Bad Losers being a one-joke song, but it’s a great joke. And the tune edges it for me. Also I once got a crucial point in a pub quiz (which we won) on a question about Cetshwayo, and it was totally down to this song!

Evening of Swing for me – I prefer the lyrics and the tune’s a belter.

I’m not from round here, mate. You should have got the bus.

We’ll, being a chess geek I love BLOYC. However, I’m going with EOS on the basis that my one real contribution to the site is/was “knights are drawing in”. I love that imagery.

Bad Losers for me. Evening of Swing is great, but is one of a number of songs taking a (well-deserved) dig at certain types of smugness and shallowness, and “Corgi Registered Friends” is the masterpiece of that genre.
The lines “Too late/With your Nxe3” give Bad Losers the edge: I mean, chess notation in a song – genius!

Any song name-checking Shacketon would win by default ,but throwing in Cetshwayo as well just seals the deal for me .
But has to be said Ambeside is a very strong album so this “battle” seems like two English teams being drawn against each other in the Champions league qualifying round .

Dennis Bell got my vote..

Evening of Swing for me as well as it’s probably one of the best openers of a HMHB album.

I’m a Bad Losers fan, mainly because of falling in love with the idea of Dennis Bell of Torquay, somehow it just works for me. Plus the Deep Blue as Sports Personality of the Year – love it

Bad Losers for me too. The first time I heard the Deep Blue line I sprayed a mouthful of Tetleys finest brew all over the monitor. It gets my vote for that alone. I agree with the analogy of a local derby match too , with them both being from the same album.
Checkmate.

“Evening of Swing”, definitely. great tune, fantastic lyrical imagery, and it has that underlying sense of genuine righteous anger i so love in HMHB songs (c.f. “A Country Practice”). “Bad Losers” just seems musically and lyrically quite slight in comparison.

As someone said above, to get a chess notation into the lyrics swings (ahem) it for me towards Bad Losers, but it was only on penalties.

Loving these threads cos they’re like jumpers-for-goalposts in the local park. One side is 6-1 up then 2 more lads arrive and it’s 6-4, then 7-4 and its all gone Ferenc Puskas, but someone’s had to run off home for their tea. At the moment the comments are 8-7 to EOS but it could go either way.
And I’m just the old bloke in the mac on the touchline making comments about Billy Liddell and pretending not to notice me dog pissing on the jumpers.

wow, this Mayor bloke’s got pretty savvy in the last 24 hours.

I actually thought I would go for Bad Losers but listening again there’s no way I can ignore the sat nav line followed by the “real rat pack”. Apocalyptic genius.

How can you not love a song that namechecks Cetshwayo. Lyrically simpler but slight, never. And it rocks a damn sight harder than Evening of Swing.

Love the thought of Deep Blue getting “at least the overseas”. Went for evening of swing this time though.

Agree with 2Chevs re: the overseas. But love the “miffed”, “heed this” vocabulary.
Expected to vote for Swings, but it’s Chess for me. If it’s a one joke song, the one joke is Crouch-esque – gangly but effective, and lasts the full 90 minutes.
