All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit
vs.
The Trumpton Riots
Another local derby, and another huge, huge tie, between two giants of the Half Man Half Biscuit songbook. Their performance in the qualifying stages was almost indistinguishable, and there will be tears.

Dead easy this one!

I suspect I may not be alone in saying that Dukla Prague was where it all began for me … heard it on John Peel, can’t have been any earlier than late 1986 which, in retrospect, makes it all the more bizarre that he got the title wrong (missing out the “Away Kit”), although at least he played it at the right speed. Took me until 1991 to buy anything though.
So DPAK it is.

Another horn-sporting dilemma for me to be on.

I lost my Biscuit cherry to Trumpton so I couldn’t go any other way

At last an easy one, It’s the dodgy transformer again and again….

shit, tough call, lyrically DPAK just pips it but as Trumpton was first HMHB song I heard it only just gets my vote. At least its not the final.

Am in a real quandary – my heart says “Trumpton” my head says “DPAK”, or is it the other way round? “Sophie’s Choice” all over again.
No one said that being a HMHB fan would be easy – but I didn’t expect this! Mea culpa!

Cant conformism since 1966 – superb.
I love “DPAK”, but Trumpton for me … just (away goals)

Poolio
Can barely fit a Rizzla between these two….
Although I never particularly lliked the line “so he sent his doting mother up the stairs with the step ladder” so I’m going for… The Riot… just…

Ouch! Toerag’s right about Sophie’s Choice. Sentimentality wins the day – a boy never forgets his first time, so Chippy Minton Socialists it is.
Elevate!

… whereas I love the ‘doting mother’ line. Makes me imagine the spoilt brat in Viz.

hmmmm – easier than I thought…dodgy transformers…

Dead simps. DPAK wins hands down.

Initially thought this was going be a difficult one, gave it a bit of thought and realised it was easy, it’s an easy win for Dukla Prague.

The nightmare draw for me. I think I was 12/13 when my Dad brought home from work the 7″ single containing Trumpton Riots on the A-side and Dukla Prague on the B-side. I’d never heard of HMHB and put on the single and I was a fan from then on. I might have to abstain, it feels wrong not to vote for both – check boxes not radio buttons please!

I always preferred All I Want, lyrically, probably because it was something I could relate to in a lot of ways, going round to your mates’ houses after school because some of them had better toys than you. Trumpton Riots was one where the novelty wore off after a while, for me at least, whereas All I Want is one I can listen to over and over again so it was easie for me to vote.

A no-brainer for me this, All I Want is still my favourite Biscuit lyric, I find it really touching and hilarious all at the same time, beautifully observed. It was such a treat to hear them do it in Leamington a couple of years ago.

Sorry, but I reckon Dukla Prague is a little over-rated. Captain Snort takes it for me.

Dodgy transformer for me too.

Ben Woodcock
They are both great but easy win for DPAK for me.

Possibly the best 2 songs from the early days and would have been a worthy final.
A bit like current holders Liverpool playing league champions Forest in the first round of the European Cup in 1979/80.
PS Poolio, The stairs/step ladders line is fine as she would have had to carry the ladders up the stairs to be able to use them to get up to the loft through the hatch. I think this song with the doting mother must have been the inspiration for ‘Spoilt Bastard’ in Viz

Dodgy transformer … good
Basque-like conrgrinders … better

Who on earth warmed these balls? Trumpton by a pippin.

Only had this on 12″ for ages so DPAK was a dodgy taping I had off Peely, so it has to be the Riots every time.

Trumpton by a smidgen. Partly down to not having been involved with either Subbuteo or Scalextric in my youth.
6 May 2011
Steve Malkmoose
I was a massive Subbuteo fan as a kid and I even had a goalkeeper with no arms! Happy childhood memories every time I hear DPAK; on the other hand Trumpton is the Biscuits’ “Anarchy in the UK” song.
Im going to toss a coin…..
it landed on its edge so I abstain !

Bloody hell, two absolute classics, and two songs that got most of us into this in the first place.
Going for DPAK but with a heavy heart.

Agreed Dave.

Going for Riots but with a heavy heart.

Going for Riots – love the manic chant of ‘elevate’ and a great backing track.
