I hope someone else will manage a proper review- but a great cover of “Holiday in Cambodia”, and no Pringles price- as missing from setlist again

Splendid gig at the Sheffield Plug last night, without doubt one of the most raucous and wild moshpits I had seen at a Biscuit gig.
The night was dogged with various ‘sound issues’ with Ken and Neil both suffering at times through no fault of their own, but the diverse set list (including some songs not heard for years like ‘Turned Up, Clocked On, Laid Off’, ‘Venus in Flares’ and ‘Surging Out of Convalesence’) made the gaps between the songs manageable.
NB57 entertained in between of course with tales of where he had been, Lou Reed inspired bad back songs, Total Network Solutions (went over my head I’m afraid), flying mobile phones (on pay as you throw?) and even a pair of socks thrown on stage for Ken.
During the 5 song encore we had a brilliant ‘Holiday in Cambodia’ as well as the oft’ shouted but rarely played ‘Time Flies By’.
Even the sky was a PBR on the snake pass home with a tinge of green from the Aurora Borealis (on toast) the perfect finish to a tremendous night.

Good to hear they played “Surging out of Convalescence” and “Venus in Flares”–two of my favorites. Speaking as a fan who lives about 3400 miles away from any future HMHB gigs, these reviews are very much appreciated. The more detailed, the better.
Hope all the biscuiteers had a rousing time…

Only my second HMHB gig, utterly brilliant! Just like I’m 14 again (or 20 in my case, pogoing back in the day to the original ‘Holiday In Cambodia’). I’d imagine the Total Network Solutions reference was to the League of Wales team now renamed New Saints, or have I missed a PBR? As Jeff Stelling used to say on Soccer Saturday, “They’ll be dancing in the streets of Total Network Solutions tonight”. Tranmere Rovers also put in an appearance as the only team with a 100% record at Highbury (1-0 in a 1979 League Cup match). Enjoyed the Tipp-Ex gag (“Also bought 2 litres of Tipp-Ex – big mistake”). Elevate!!

An all around top night had by all – cracking atmosphere in a rammed Plug and a top set list all around – had a great night and bought a lighter (International act with own PA and excellent light show). Highlights – kicking off with Them’s The Vagaries was grand, Time Flies By, Surging Out Of Convalescence, a fantastic straight cover of Holiday In Cambodia segueing straight into Vatican Broadside. Well worth the two hour journey over there after the Preston debacle, I can tell you. And I finally got me a road sign t-shirt. Cracking stuff.

The Plug was my first Biscuit gig ever (despite listening to Peel sessions 25 years ago) and I even dragged my reluctant husband along who had never heard any HMHB. He was well impressed with all the football references. The atmosphere was wonderful, everyone was just digging it & even bothered so that I could get a view (I’m not very tall). The set was way better that I dared to dream, but I did not realise at the time how privileged I was to hear Time Flies By; and Holidays in Cambodia was a treat. What a refreshing antidote to life in general. Then imagine my joy in finding a website dedicated to enlightening me to PBRs. I will return.
Ruddy heck, Roger’ Green’s trusty set list has just appeared on the official site and look what’s at number two, finally at long last getting the live debut we thought we’d never see, six years on. Just when I was missing my first gig in the last five, just when I’d agonised for ages about whether to go the gig or go the match.
I feel like a beggar who spent a whole season a few years back begging for asparagus and then being in Prague when it was finally pelted out. I’m DBT, GBP.
NB57 had passed us outside the gig in Holmfirth and (associating me with my former campaign for this track) had shrugged and said he’d been trying to persuade the lads to do it, but nothing doing. I’d gone beyond thinking I’d never hear it. And maybe I still never will.
Anyway, how was it anyone ? Solos similar to Peel version ?
Here’s the full 30-song set list (thanks Roger).
Them’s The Vagaries Asparagus Next Left Petty Sessions Left Lyrics In The Practice Room Mate Of The Bloke The Light At The End Of The Tunnel Tending The Wrong Grave Foot Up In Europe (followed by an interesting note from Nigel about how the crowd shots from the Arsenal-Barcelona match the previous night made it look like a post-graduate convention) Totnes Bickering Fair Fuckin’ ‘Ell It’s Fred Titmus Surging Out Of Convalescence Venus In Flares Trumpton Riots RSVP San Antonio Foam Party We Built This Village On A Trad Arr Tune National Shite Day Evening Of Swing Turned Up Clocked On Laid Off Joy Division Oven Gloves Uffington Wassail Running Order Squabble Fest All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit 99% Of Gargoyles Look Like Bob Todd
And then there was an epic encore:

Oh God, how I long for a review that doesn’t mention comedy band, The Tube, not taking themselves seriously or being championed by John Peel, and just recognises how bloody good they are!

I just long for a review that mentions Asparagus. I have meanwhile heard from a prominent industry insider that they ‘botched’ the song. But my source is a notoriously harsh critic and I just hope my favourite will make the first team squad next time.
I notice the odds on a late spring/early summer album release have tumbled since the Shepherd’s Bush gig was announced.
