Good show, but unfortunately one or two bad knobheads in the audience (which I suppose is inevitable at a ‘Sold Out’ show).
One bloke at the side of the hall kept shouting “Shite!” and “Entertain me!”. As a denizen of Merseyside (the Wirral, to be more precise) myself, it pains me to say that this prick had a Merseyside accent. My blood is still boiling!
Anyway, I wasn’t going to let a cock like him spoil what was otherwise a very good show. Mosh pit was very boisterous (? sic) indeed, so much so that security were deployed at one stage!
Some good banter, including an ill advised bit of banter between NB57 and myself about the lives and loves of Ken Barlow (I should have known I couldn’t compete with the master) and the relative merits of caravan sites in Abersoch.
Six months until Preston. Surely we won’t have to wait until then?
Haha! I’m on a couple of those photos. Thanks for the link, Chris!

Thanks for posting that Shrewbury 24-Hour Garage People video off Paul’s blog. Gives us a chance to compare the patter with Cambridge the night before, and thus achieve a “statistic of approximate differentiation” between the two (or S.A.D. for short).
I love Oulton Park mug, WW2 wordsearch (searching for Von Paulus for 2 hours), New Wave Of British Heavy Metal top trumps (my ???? trumps your Whitesnake), chair on google images, and his mate’s got a ?????? (ask him next to you), Breakin the Law, Breakin the Law, shell issue jumper, the t-shirt’s t-shirt, eastern philosophical design, ???? logo, I’m all out of Love, we’re all out of bread, Who needs tonight, we’ve got next Thursday….
Of those 80 or so words that I’ve used to summarise the 2 minutes of patter in Shrewsbury up to “What sandwiches have you got ?” only about 24 words, or about 3 out of 12 “items”, are the same as in Cambridge the night before.
Which gives us a S.A.D.of around 25 to 30%. Most impressive.
29 March 2010
Charles Exford
Sorry of course the true S.A.D is 70-75%.
I was using the Wirral method, i.e, the Counting References Approximately Similar Statistic, which gives us a C.R.A.S.S. of 25-30%.

More on the 24hr Garage people from Shrewsbury, which isn’t on the video clip. At the end of the “….…what sandwiches have you got?” bit, NB57 normally comes up with Our Mate, Chief, Pal, Ace, Captain (over-50), Boss and Bud. At Shrewsbury somebody shouted “Soft Lad”, NB57 replied with “I’m having that one……”

s.g.d A Shropshire Lad
At the gig I thought that it was…
“I say Saxon trumps your whitesnake”
“his mate’s got a Kwaka thou'” (as in a Kawasaki 1000)
Someone down the front said “what?” so he repeated it to no avail hence “ask him next to you”
“Morkill crease Beehive” well that’s what it sounded like – something to do with the Rockies???

I loved the Shrewsbury gig. That was my HMHB baptism. I’ve already bought tickets for Holmfirth. I’m nothing if not dedicated in my Johnny-Come-Lately-ness.
In all other respects, it’s a car crash of a programme. The last 10 – 15 minutes, or so, is about HMHB.

I was stood next to the knobhead at the side of the hall, and assumed (due to the accent) he was a friend of the band. Oh well. Not only was the heckling poor form – his mate’s wretched flatulence was a bit of a dampener too.
Does anybody remember the (handful of?) names that Nigel actually remembered God gave us? I recall Tony Gubba and Claudia Winkleman but that’s about it….

Thanks Chris.
I’ve been learning Welsh since Christmas, I was very impressed by Nigel’s short burst of the language early in the gig. It’s much more than most people pick up, even if they live in Wales (not intended to sound sanctimonious – just manage it naturally.)
Anyone know the roots to this, or if there’s more to his Welsh than a few (excellently pronounced) phrases.
What a great site, by the way.
29 March 2010

Adam,
I’ve been attending a ‘Dosbarth Cymraeg’ since January this year [Cwrs Wplan] as well & I was also impressed with his Welsh – even ironic in Welsh, saying “I don’t speak Welsh” in Welsh; & then apologising, in Welsh! His pronunciation of all Welsh place names is very good!
Great show btw.

Adam,
NB57 spends a fair bit of time walking and cycling in North Wales.
Also, I’m sure I read somewhere that his Dad lives in Rhyl, home of the world renowned ‘Sun Centre’.
But I don’t want to railroad this thread… sorry. If you want to practice ever look me up on Facebook.
Hello Mr Shark. He mentioned something about cycling in Rhosesmor, very close to where I grew up (Nannerch).

A fairly typical set tho, one’s I remember (in no particular order) Light at the end of the tunnel, Fred Tittmuss, Evening Sun, Apache (Shadows cover), Garage People, Evening of Swing, Shite Day, Look Dad, God Gave us life, JDOG, Vitas Gueralitas, Everythings AOR, Running Order Squabble Fest, Lark Descending, Footprints, Petty Sessions, Mountain Bikes ?, Irk the Purists plus an unknown cover right at the end. I’ve probably missed a few but this is from memory! Feel free to add on. Great gig and well worth travelling down for. Next stop Preston hopefully.

If my ears don’t betray me, the second cover was “River Deep, Mountain High”, last heard chez moi by Ike and Tina Turner. Fantastic. My evening was tinged with a bit of irritation as I kept having beer spilled on me, principally by some gob-on-legs in a knitted hat, who spent the gig dodging back and forth between the bar and the far side of the room and seemed a bit, er, tired and emotional.
But never mind, eh? Cyril and I enjoyed it hugely, all our favourites played (haven’t heard Running Order Squabble Fest for awhile), 24 Hour Garage People a classic as always, and Nigel on top form banter-wise. I was delighted they were so lively having done the Cambridge gig the night before.
It all made for a good weekend trip away, not least because we had to pass through a village called Exfordsgreen to get to Shrewsbury. Thought of you, Charles. We’re waiting now for Bilston, hoping that Number One Daughter can come along this time.

Thanks for the link to my blog, Chris. I didn’t even know it was here until I checked through my referrals. Some people have taken the time to click through and read what I had to say.
The gig itself was a good ‘un from the start. Before the band came on, the PA was playing the Dubside of the moon, and it just fitted my mood perfectly. It was good to be able to stand up and bop about a bit. The space was very basic and boxy, but the sound was good and the crowd were up for it. I can’t remember anything like all the setlist, but they covered a lot of ground, from the Back in the DHSS stuff, right through to CSI Ambleside. The obligatory cover version was Telstar if I remember rightly.
Best time I’ve ever had at a HMHB gig was when they did Liverpool Krazy House with Jegsy Dodd in support. That’s one of my top 3 all time best gigs of anyone anywhere. Probably was a bit more restrained this time, partly because of the bouncers, who waded in because someone had taken their shirt off.
It was a long set, without a break. I don’t know how many songs they played, but I couldn’t complain about getting value for my sixteen quid. And then an encore as well, just to put the cherry on top.
Class gig! I hope I can find the time to get to either Preston or Bilston.

No Simon, it’s never too late to point out errors, typos or sheer illiteracy. I actually thought it was called “Theatre Seven” (I must have copied it from somewhere) which is why despite looking at it many time, I’ve never noticed the mistake. But the real scandal is that 1,407 people have looked at this page, and 6,478 people have looked at the gig reviews contents page (where the error is repeated), and not one pedant has pointed out the mistake. To say my faith in you lot has just been shot to pieces is an understatement.
