My love of all things Nordic started in Torquay in the summer of ’83. The main starter was a Norwegian called Mona.
It was a very raucous trip with several mates. It started off in Glasgow holiday fortnight, which was great, as the Jocks were out for a good time and really did let their hair down. By the end it was Brummie car factory fortnight and the atmosphere changed, much for the worse.
These days, I spose factory fortnights are a thing of the past.

Mrs. Exford’s grandad Len played 20 games for them in his final season as a pro, 1958-59. They finished 12th in Div. 4. Just noticed that on my parents’ wedding day he played in the derby at Exeter in front of 13,000. 2-2.

Basil to Polly: “I’ll ruin you! You’ll never waitress in Torquay again.”
Basil to Mrs Richards: “Well may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically…”

Frank O’Farrell and Ken Sandercock, both came to Leicester City via Torquay United. One was a club legend the other not so.

Two weeks after their glorious victory on penalties over Torquay returned them to the elite 92, one notes that Hartlepool have about 5 players contracted for the season which starts in a few weeks. Ah well, at least the extra month on their season meant that Tranmere didn’t nick their manager (I have it on good authority that this was going to happen if Pools hadn’t made the play-offs).
Gutted meself to find that I have to travel to South coast on the 4th Sept for sister-in-law’s 60th party, rather than be at Prenton Park to welcome back the nighty HUFCl. Good luck with the season anyway Peter Mc!
PS – I’ve found out that the second sentence of comment 3 in this thread is wrong – that wasn’t one of Len’s twenty games for Torquay, just in case any TUFC stattoes happened to wander by.

Mighty is correct Exxo and thanks again for your wishes. I must say that Torquays fans are not gracious losers. The atmosphere at Ashton Gate was a wee bit frosty . Talking of not frosty , I do hope that Mr.Steve has not fried over there in Oregon.
