Way before the date mentioned, I’ve been living in France since 2004, Baetzea and myself heard that for the first time somewhere up North, (Yorkshire?) well it was north to us, as we were from the midlands, Stu would probably remember. Just trying to picture the venue, it wasn’t pretty

Shouldn’t the Cardiff ones be spelt ‘Help Me Rhondda’?

@ Ginge They played ‘Rhonda’ a lot in ’97, and 18th April that year at the Duchess was one of a few times I defo saw them do it (a two-cover gig if I’m not mistaken, with ‘Transmission’ as well I think).
NB there’s another thread for non-video-ed cover versions, and one on Gez’s site, though both are far from complete.

@Dr D: That was a storming gig! St David’s Day in a brilliant venue watching a superb band belting out the locals’ national anthem. Second only, personally, to the Dean Friedman moment. Looks like a substitute guitarist as well…
The only minor downside was the morning after in the crisp frost when we had a 1300-mile drive ahead of us.

I notice that during the lead-in to ‘New Dawn Fades’ at Manc Students’ Union (30.11.01) NB10 sings the title of “WBTVOATAT”, 4 years before ‘Achtung Bono’ (and apparently some time before settling on its own tune). He also spots Rostrum Cameraman Ken Morse, an early TV credit (see Toby Haynes, Freddie Slade).

GOK WAN ACOLYTE
Just out of interest, what is in Nigel’s jeans’ pocket in that clip? (No, not some sort of euphemism). A small non-smart mobile phone? Radio mike transmitter? Asthma inhaler?

Well now that you ask it does seem an unhealthy interest but I’d like to think it’s that ‘sound effects machine’ again, and he either realised he didn’t have enough hands to deploy it during ‘Rubber Bullets’, or forgot to do so, or arranged that The King/Dr. John would supply the siren instead, or it was for 24HGP and so was never needed.
But then again it doesn’t look big enough, prolly his phone then.

@GWA – We found out at the Cardiff gig the source of the mystery bulge in Nigel’s jeans when he whipped out and utilised a Vicks Nasal Spray mid song.

Apparently, the more accurate description is a Vicks Decongestant Inhaler

The harbinger of nothing
Many thanks to Bobby Svarc (and CtSO for facilitating). I like the cover of No Regrets – but I find it a bit weird to listen to as it doesn’t quite sound like HMHB. Nigel doesn’t even sound like himself, somehow!
Does anyone know the history behind it? Why did they cover this particular song – one of only two which have been officially released, is it not? (Excluding the myriad bits of tune which have been nicked, of course!) How did the duet with Margi Clarke come about and why? And how come it was left off … Stony Ground?

I think Ms Clarke was somewhat foisted upon them. Sonia was the first choice but she was double booked.

Bobby Svarc
Wasn’t Ms Clarke’s boyfriend a sleeve designer for the Sex Pistols? Did he do the NR artwork or was that Steve the sleeve?
26 May 2018
Dr Desperate
My cassette cover says “Sleeve Jamie Reid Steve Hardstaff”.

Jamie Reid, that’s right, I think he was the man who invented newspaper cutting text. Cheers

@Bobby Svarc. You’re right, in fact he did all the famous Sex Pistols covers. NMTB, God Save the Queen, etc.

Actually Margi was third choice. Nerys Hughes was booked, but pulled out at the last minute, costing valuable time; hence the follow up song. God’s truth.

transit full of keith
The cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Bike’ (Cambridge Junction last year) is not on youtube & one of the best covers I’ve seen them do. One of the most site-specific as well (Syd Barrett grew up about 300 yards from the venue & by some accounts first met David Gilmour about 300 yards in the other direction, in the Crown, which is now the Flying Pig).
Just mentioning it in case any of this site’s denizens managed to capture it for posterity …
