Despite it being a repeat of 2015’s final, few people thought the result was a foregone conclusion, particularly once the analysts had reminded us that 2015 runner-up Light had actually won that year’s Baguette Dilemma Round. Choosing between these two giants was just as difficult, however. Cuz said: “Based solely on how much effort is required to dance to NSD for what seems like 15 minutes at a gig, I’m going to have to vote Light at the end of the Tunnel.” Parsfan possibly spoke for many by adding: “After listening to them both back-to-back a few times the other day, I’ve gone for Shite. That said, I really don’t care if I’ve backed a winner or not.” In the end, it was a reversal of the 2015 result.

A suitably contrived voting procedure took used football results from five different competitions being played on the same evening, featuring teams from the A-Z of HMHB. And all this just to come up with two fixtures. The 2015 finalists were kept apart, leading Transit Full Of Keith to ask: “Is anyone going to predict anything but Lux 2015 history repeating itself from here? Same final, same winner?” Cream Cheese & Chives didn’t seem concerned, saying: “My favourite songs aren’t going to be in the final but I will try to sit back and enjoy the game as a neutral.”

With the World Korfball Championship starting at the same time as the draw, it seemed only right to link the two, and the result was four intriguing ties. Two Fat Feet remarked: “First two are both tough calls for me, although the other two both go quite comfortably the way of the Cammell Laird stablemates.” One of those made it through, but AOR pushed our eventual winner to the limit.

Strongly-fancied newcomer Terminus met its match in this round, much to many voters’ dismay. “Clearly stupid people have been duped and have voted on a populist mandate”, said JD O’Gloves. Will of the people an’ all that, I’m afraid. The fixture brought out some of the best discussion of the tournament though. Reflecting the agony of many voters the whole way through, Stevo Orlic said: “The Mrs has threatened to leave me because I voted for National Shite Day over Dukla Praha Away Kit; where will it all end?”

The draw was performed by matching songs with riders in an early stage of the Tour de France (oh, our timing is so good), and it didn’t produce too many walkovers, although a couple of decent songs like Damnation never got going. Match 3 was brilliantly dubbed “The Ogwen Valley derby”. Gez (‘Old Biscuit’) came on to lament: “Ah well, old biscuit site’s favourite gets a hammering in the last 32. Not enough Thomas Hardy completists these days”, which made CtSO realise that hmhb.co.uk and this site have one thing very much in common.
